On Wednesday, I went to Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to watch the US play Mexico in a World Cup Qualifier. The US had never beaten Mexico in Azteca. Sadly that didnt change in this game.
Estadio Azteca holds about 110,000 people and was completely sold out. I would guess there were a couple hundred US fans.
We were seated in the upper deck in a fenced off section surrounded by riot police.
There was lots of yelling back and forth but everyone was pretty friendly in the beginning.
The US scored first, about 12 minutes into the game. Our tiny section went nuts, while the rest of the stadium was completely quiet.
I expected the atmosphere to get more hostile at that point, but nothing happened.
Then Mexico scored.
The entire stadium went insane. It was one of the most amazing sounds Ive ever heard.
Near the end of the game Mexico scored again, and held on for the victory.
The police quickly escorted us out of the stadium, holding back the mexican fans all around us.
Here are two videos of the US fans being escorted out of the stadium after the game by riot police. They put us in a paddy wagon and drove us to a different metro stop to make our way home.
All in all, it was an amazing experience. I am going to try and come back in 4 years for the next round.

I knew you would revel in the role of the "antagonist"!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see you abandoned your original plan to sit amongst fans of the home team :)
